If you're in the market for a new hammock, the first factor to consider is the type of fabric.
Hammocks can be crafted from a variety of materials, each with their own set of pros and cons. Some of the best hammock fabrics include cotton, polyester, nylon, acrylic and polypropylene. Each of these materials have unique qualities that impact factors such as durability, comfort, sustainabilityand resistance to the elements.
By understanding the differences between these materials, you can choose the best hammock fabric for your needs and enjoy a comfortable and relaxing outdoor experience.
Here are my honest opinions based on my experience
- 100% COTTON hammocks are the most comfortable of fabric hammocks. High-quality virgin cotton have longer fibers.. Unfortunately, it seems that for most manufacturers a hammock do not deserve quality cotton. High-quality cotton with long fibers are soft to the touch, lint-free, durable, and easy to clean. (MY FAVOURITE)
The most comfortable hammock material but it has to be dry. Cotton hammock have that "chic" look.
- POLY/COTTON: When the fiber of the cotton is too short, weather because it is recycled material or just bad quality cotton, some manufacturer will add 25% to 35% of polyester when they weave the fabric. If tightly woven this material can be strong and better resist friction. But most of the time the goal is to use less cotton since it is more expensive than polyester. But if you take a good look at the material you will see that it is often an open weave (Chinese)
Entry line material not as soft on the skin as pure cotton. Not lint free. Will not resist time. Also has to be kept dry. Generally only straight line designs.
- WEATHERPROOF FABRIC: This functional fibre was specially developed by La Siesta for the particular requirements of outdoor hammocks. It is easy to maintain, quick-drying and weatherproof. This material is not as soft as cotton but very comfortable thanks to its thight weave. Also, not worrying about it when outside under the rain is a major plus.
Strong and tightly woven material; I like it
- ACRYLIC: This is the best material for hammock weaving. Mine are made by hill tribe peoples from the mountains of the north of Thailand. As thread they use Acrylic (softer than cotton and more vibrant colours). The Acrylic thread combines the advantage of an organic and synthetical material. The raw material is woven like cotton and feels very soft and comfortable. Acrylic is very resistant to water and sun, sustaining its colours over many years. On the market the raw material is in Average more than twice as expensive as cotton, in favor of longevity, beauty and high comfort.
Hill tribe hammocks are not only weatherproof but also the most beautiful. The only hammocks certified by the WORLD FAIR TRADE ORGANIZATION.
- POLYESTER: Soft-spun polyester cords can last up to 5 times as long as similar cotton hammocks. You can leave them outdoors for the entire hammock season. Please store indoors for wintertime.
Soft material and micro weave for no waffle marks. Body weight is distributed evenly throughout the hammock. I love them
NYLON: Nylon Trilobal — a high-quality functional fabric that is durable and fast-drying yet breathable and thin for ultimate comfort. This parachute silk material makes the Travel hammock the perfect choice for any outdoor adventure.
Will be damage by UV rays if left permanently under the sun.
